The classes are part of our ESOL project called “ESOL for Integration” funded by the Big Lottery Fund. ESOL for integration provides a dedicated ESOL class for migrants to help them integrate into British society. Classes will focus on practical English as well as teaching aspects of British culture. The aim is to break down the largest obstacle to integration, employment and success in a new country: the language barrier. Unlike other ESOL classes, however, these have been tailored for migrants and will address other aspects of integration such as citizenship test, local culture, British politics, British history, and will place a heavy focus on spoken English to enable migrants to thrive.
The project currently runs in three boroughs each teaching three classes a week. There is an opportunity for an accredited certificate in English language skills at the end. On-line classes have continued throughout lockdown, providing students with a much-needed space to meet, find support and to carry on their studies. We are also starting our new September 2020 term on-line, aiming to have some smaller classes back in the classroom from the beginning of November (after half-term).
